Saving the planet isn’t particularly hard: tax bad things to make them much more expensive, then use that money to subsidize good things so they’re much cheaper, then let people live their lives.
And as fewer people buy gasoline and fast-food cheeseburgers, and more people buy energy-efficient heat pumps and locally grown-organic carrots, the more environmental and human health improves, the more money we save, and we end up living happily ever after. The end.
Now, there is no chance…zero…that this scenario comes about as a function of public policy. Especially now.
The thing is: those of us who want to bring about an equitable and environmentally sustainable society are a majority of the population, and an even bigger majority economically – we won’t need anyone’s permission to do anything.
Introducing The Virtual Commonwealth: Members agree to self-tax on their unsustainable purchases, and that money is then used to crowdfund sustainable companies with strong social equity profiles in which VCW Members become equity partners.
